Composer Dieter Schnebel made music history with his ‘Maulwerke’ (mouth works). The score initiates a communication process, demands extremely virtuoso vocal technique and formulates a new processual concept of the work. On the occasion of the composer's 80th birthday in 2010, the ensemble Die Maulwerker developed a new version of the work, presented here in a film version. The camera is a co-creator, the image becomes an independent ‘voice’ and forms its own sequences.
... The final stage result from the Academy of Arts captivates with its richness of nuance (...) and focus on the essentials. Susanne Elgeti's visual language does full justice to this by concentrating radically and without any embellishment on the ‘sound bodies’ and their articulations.
Dirk Wieschollek, Fono Forum February 2012
The producers of the DVD have come up with a special variant in the form of a twelve-minute ‘cut-up’ version of the ‘Maulwerke’: a version in which different film clips from the documentary and the cinematic realisation of the work are mixed together differently each time it is played. This access to different stages of development thus breaks down the directionality of the development process and realises a convincing, media-technologically advanced continuation of Schnebel's concept.
